5 Biggest Mistakes of Structured Data
Manipulative Behavior – When you put information in the structured data to lure in traffic but that information has nothing to do with your site. For instance, claiming to have a job offer but showing no such posting on your site.
Violating Use Guidelines – Google has a set of guidelines to determine how you are able to USE the structured data. It determines what is appropriate and what appears as spammy behavior to the search engine. When your content validates in Google’s Structured Data Testing Tool, that does NOT necessarily mean you aren’t in violation.
Violating Content Guidelines – Google also has guidelines in place for how to form the specific data types. By not following developer rules for how to code or place data types such as articles, books, events, local business, podcasts, etc., you are violating how Google wants things structured to be read. This is a manual penalty.
Wrong Data – This is simply incorrect tagging. If you are a company offering a service and you structure data for a product, that is a violation. You are confusing the search spiders as to how to categorize your site and what value you provide users. Sometimes this is done intentionally in hopes of getting into many or all categories but it will be caught and you will be slapped with a manual penalty.
Data Not Matching Content – Your structured data MUST match what you say on your site. If you list a price in your structured data and a completely different price for that same item or service on your site, you have broken the guideline.
